What are overgrowth fees?
To ensure your lawn is cut safely and looks its best, it is important to accurately represent the length of your grass when booking. LawnGuru considers any grass 6 inches or taller to be overgrown.
Why overgrown lawns cost more
Cutting overgrown grass requires significantly more time, labor, and equipment maintenance than a standard cut.
Multiple passes: To achieve a clean finish without damaging your turf, providers must cut the lawn multiple times at different heights.
Equipment strain: Tall grass causes increased wear and tear on professional mowing decks and engines.
Labor time: An overgrown property can take two to three times longer to service than a maintained lawn.
Overgrown pricing tiers
When you place an order, you pre-authorize the necessary overgrowth charges so our providers can complete the job correctly. Providers are required to upload photo evidence to verify the grass length before any additional fees are applied.
Grass Height | Price Adjustment | Example ($40 Base Price) |
6" – 12" | +50% of the service cost | $60.00 Total |
12" – 24" | +100% of the service cost | $80.00 Total |
24"+ | Up to 4x the service cost | Custom Quote Required |
Note: For extreme overgrowth (24"+), your provider may submit a custom quote, which you must approve in the app before work begins.
How to avoid overgrowth fees
The most reliable way to avoid extra charges is to maintain a consistent service schedule.
Book Weekly Service: This is the best way to ensure your lawn stays manicured all season. Weekly customers who do not skip appointments are never charged overgrowth fees.
Adjust for the Season: During slower growth periods, you can switch to bi-weekly service to keep costs down while still staying below the 6-inch threshold.
Limit Skips: If you have a recurring service but skip multiple appointments, your grass may exceed 6 inches. If this happens, a one-time overgrowth fee may apply to your next service.
Recurring service and overgrowth
If you have a recurring service but frequently skip appointments or have a frequency that doesn't match your lawn's growth rate, you may still receive an overgrowth fee. We recommend choosing a frequency that prevents the grass from reaching the 6-inch limit between visits.
